From Avant-garde to Political Satire: Dzigan and Shumacher's Theater - 18710

In this course, we’ll learn about Shimen Dzigan and Yisroel Shumacher’s theater, from the beginning of their work at the Ararat avant-garde Yiddish theater in Łodz, Poland (1927) to their Warsaw theater, where they produced bold, groundbreaking political satire. The course further discusses their wanderings through the Soviet Union during World War II and their attempt to revive Jewish culture in Poland after the Holocaust, and finally describes their arrival in Israel, first as guest performers and later on as permanent residents.
We’ll deal with the restrictions on Yiddish actors in Israel in 1950, and the duo's insistence on performing in their own language, translating the new Israeli reality into unique and timely satire.

We’ll work with rare recordings, transcriptions, programs, personal diaries, letters, photographs, oral testimonie and critical articles, not only to learn about the duo but also to practice archival research in Theater and Performance Studies.
