This course introduces students to different ways of discussing, writing and thinking about theatre and performance, from staged-based performance to performance in everyday life. We’ll consider the interrelation between theatre and other arts, and learn how to think about theater and performance in their broad cultural, historical, socio-political and aesthetic contexts
We will learn key concepts and discuss the related disciplines of theatre and performance studies, the history of those disciplines, and their main figures. We’ll learn basic methods of documenting, analyzing, interpreting and writing about theater and performance as well as methods for writing theatre-historiographical research.
We’ll learn about different topics such as performance and ritual, social and cultural performance, site-specific theatre, performance of language, performance space, performance and historical contexts, performance art, directors, performers, audience, body, gender and performance.
